Subject: 32 channels; Raptor and Doom --- need help
I read the mail on how 32 channels sounds cool with Doom and Raptor,
and I would like to know a couple of things on how to do this.
1. Do I need need to get the 32 channel AIL drivers? If so, do I
still need to run ultramid, then loadpats? I have never used the
32 channel ail drivers, you see.
2. I edited the configuration files in Doom and Raptor, and tried
Raptor, but there were NOT 32 channels. What needs to be done?

This is just getting silly. I bought my GUS (3.7) a couple of weeks ago based
on a solid recommendation from my officemate (Hi Pete). Since I bought it I
have heard horror story after horror story about how poor the GUS is and how
it locks up with this game or that setting. I also read with amusement
PC Mag's review of the GUS. Maybe I am extremely lucky but really the only
problem I have had with my GUS was finding memory to do the upgrade (that
problem is now solved). Raptor works fine on my PC (386-33MHz). I have it
set up to for the maximum number of channels and have played it for a couple
of hours with no lockups or slow downs.
Why does everyone seem to have it in for the GUS? It really isn't all that
complicated.

I'm waiting to. I don't know any of hungarian GUSsers, who got
something from Advanced Gravis. So what do we had to got?
(I was just going back to the store and I realized what on the ad
was: 3.4 Gravis UltraSound with Install 3.1. So I asked to copy it
for me.) Is there something I had to got from GRAVIS? A letter, that
I'm registered or anything else?
Anybody?

You have to run setup.exe!

Of coz.
Run GUSBOS on your friends SoundBlaster. It's really makes fun of SB.

Microsoft said last year that the Win4.0 would be released in the
3rd quarter of 1994. In March they said September-November. I bet
my my computer (Including my GUS) that you won't see Windows4.0
coming out in 1994 !!!
I'm still well with 3.11 but if you want you can try Windows for
Workgroups 3.11. It is said that it has 32bit networking protokoll
but for single users it doesn't matter. AND it also uses 32bit
file transfering or stuff. Without using your BIOS! (or how do you
say that.) So it's faster. Try it (W3.11 for W.groups and
not W3.11!) out and see the difference!
Anyhow, is it GUS Digest or Winslows Digest?
So I'll stop myself. Just one more thing to keep it in your mind:

Just to let you know, that I'm working on this. I'm currently
shaking heaven & earth to hear something about those famous, but
untouchable drivers. I receive a message from Greg at Sierra On-Line
saying that he's looking into it and will get back to me in a day or two.
It has been reported that PQ4 as well as other Sierra 32bit
games, work well under Window for the GUS. I, myself, couldn't get
Gabriel Knight CD to run under Windows. It works for maybe 20 or 30
seconds and then give me a random error message (some of which I've never
seen before). I couldn't find anything that would explain why it works
on some system and not on others. All I can recommend you is not to use
a third-party shell in Windows, use EMM386 and make sure SHARE.EXE is
loaded. Besides that, no clue.

Hi all,
I am just begining to *really* use my GUS, and I was wondering how to I go
about creating samples in such a way that I can use them in like a MOD file.
I've tried using USS8 to get a sample of my acoustic guitar, but I don't seem
to be doing it right.
Any help or advice would greatly be appreciated. Thanks!

I beleive it helped greatly. It showed that the GUS could do
and how well it could handle sounds. By seeing that Future Crew created
the SSI's 1994 demo shows that demo groups can have a great influence.

I don't want to think about that. ;)

I know from my experience, having one machine with a PAS16 and one with a
GUS, I've shown many people demos on both, and if they're considering a
sound card, they'll always choose the GUS. Demos are one of the greatest
ways to show a sound card's capabilities. So, I'd definitely say that
demos have helped a lot as far as showing the differences between cards.

Subject: Raptor!
In Sunday's Digest I said that I had no problems with 8 voices in Raptor.
I should point out that I don't have any fancy pentium or anything: just a
plain old 386DX/40. :)
But I have to take it back: I tried this game with my joystick enabled, and
noticed that even on my mega-machine, there's a slight slowdown -not in the
action, but in the joystick routine. It causes my ship to drift northwest
for a split-second. It has no effect on gameplay for me, but for those who
experience significant slowdowns, it might be worse.
The moral: If you have slowdowns, don't buy a joystick just for Raptor.

Subject: Re: Raptor!
The message from Apogee on the GUS does seem rather wrong headed but the
assertion that the GUS can mix so many digital channels and STILL keep up
with highly complex graphics is not always so. For example, just recently
I was twiddling with my IPlay setup and I noticed that no matter what I
do, when I play a module with a large number of channels (say,
darkforc.ult), there IS significant slowdown in IPlay's graphical
features. The GUS is not totally magical, especially if the mixing is
being done in a strange way (this might be the case with Raptor).

Subject: Raptor Problems
Just a comment on the lockups some people have with Raptor (myself included),
If Apogee had such great problem in implementing the hardware mixing on
the GUS, why couldn't they clone the SB routines? I would have rather have
flawless sound (with some slowdown) than it locking up during periods of
heavy action and sound.
A 16bit DMA transfer rate is the same no matter what sound card is playing.
So, if the SB, can handle it, so can the GUS.
Any info if they intend to put in a fix?

um... Isn't this kinda like MS programmers learing from the MSDOS manual? :)
>Just one question: how much do you think that the demo scene is helping
>Advanced Gravis by supporting their awesome soundcard?
Well, let me just say that 5 people have bought the GUS as a result of my
(usually civilized) propaganda, and the ace up my sleeve ALWAYS was "This is
the Future Crew card, AG is a patron of FC).
Also, the ultimate GUS gee-whiz experience I usually show is playing Cool
City 1.2 (you tell Jonne I'm doing my very best to get it onto IL dance floors
and radio) under MDP in a windowed DOS prompt. It just kills them, and it
doesn't as much as tickle the system!
>How much would it matter if all the demo groups suddenly just stopped
>supporting it ?
Guerilla? Extortion? hmmm... :)
Well, the best thing to show off the GUS in shops or at home is demos. A
friend of mine has pledged to buy a UMax after seeing Tran's (a demo group, not
Phat!) "Timeless" and "Hell". He growls and shrieks when he runs something on
his PAS16 and gets asked "GUS/SB/nuttin'" or just "GUS/nil", so I do my best
to find apps like that (MDP, 2ndReal, Timeless, DOOM, etc.).
Anyway, one of the reasons I GUSsed was to hear your Second Reality gig like
it should (BTW, it mesmerized a whole bunch of Mac users at work - they
thought multimedia was moving sprites around in Macromind Director!), although
DOOM spurred it.
IOTW, you quit GUSsing, I'll subscribe your adress to every single listserv in
Turkish I can think of, as well as VAMPYRES, CAMEL-L and AUTOMILK. So there.
Yours dirt-equivalently,
Yossi.
PS My eternal thanks if you can get Jonne Valtonen to mail me direct via the
